An ottoman is typically a structured, upholstered footrest or low seat with a rigid frame, flat top, and defined shape. You can find them in square, rectangular, and round forms. A pouf is softer, frameless, and lower to the ground, often stuffed with filling that gives it a relaxed, casual silhouette. 

Both function as footstools and supplementary seating, but ottomans tend to offer more versatility. Many ottomans have storage and a firm enough surface to serve as a coffee table, while modern poufs lean toward decorative, accent-style use in living rooms and bedrooms.
