HISTORIC PROVENANCE
The Vase Hydria is inspired by a Greek calyx-krater (ca. 460–450 BCE), a type of terracotta bowl for mixing water and wine, attributed to the Painter of the Berlin Hydria. The original vessel features a depiction of an Amazonomachy, a legendary battle between the Greeks and the Amazons, a mythological race of female warriors. This theme, a popular subject in Greek pottery, conveys the drama and tumult of battle.
